All That Is Solid Melts into Air

This installation comprises a series of amulets, pendants, offerings, and other religious objects that various people gave me over time. They represent family memories, religious beliefs, or the practices of their bearers. The elements are used to keep a stone suspended in the air using nylon threads. The stone was extracted from a column of the destroyed Church of El Carmelo in Vedado, considered the first parish in the area. The facade of this neo-Gothic church was never finished by its sponsors, the family of the Count of Pozos Dulces. Subsequent damage caused this unfinished church to become known as El derrumbe. The rock fragment and the various objects recovered as archaeological artifacts supplant the social body while becoming a starting point for discourse on memory, history as a tool of power, religious faith, death, and existence.

Ivan Perera is a contemporary Cuban artist who works with drawing, photography, sculpture, and site-specific. His works, influenced by literature, pose questions about power, faith, death, and the body.
